Recently I had what was for me, a moving experience of hearing the Bible in English (as if for the first time) that parallels what I hope we are doing translating the Bible into an African language for African listeners. The experience was arresting because it did for me in English what we are hoping to do for others in Komba. How? It involved excellent fresh, accurate and moving translation. It involved live performance of that translation that was deeply emotional, spiritual and theological. It involved fresh theological reflection that springboarded from the translation. It involved musical performances of the translation (and original) that in some ways captured the ‘meaning’ better than the written words alone.
