Harry Potter and North American missionaries

I recently finished reading the Harry Potter series and yesterday found myself matrixing a theme from Harry Potter with a theme that emerges as North American missionaries come to Ghana. That theme is experiencing  suffering and powerlessness as a necessary precursor to legitimate use of power. Read the rest of this entry »

Strategic spaghetti planning

It all culminated in spaghetti for dinner. Seriously. We were returning from Accra after being gone more than 5 weeks. I had been in the U.S for part of the time while Nate and the two older girls hung out at home. Then we all went to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and then to Accra and were now on the last leg of our journey home. We’d stopped in Tamale to take care of a bunch of business (we thought it was 3 things and it turned out to be more like 10) and were getting home a bit later than we’d hoped. Percy–the People Chicken

Well, our little chick Percy, which we saved from the beaks of the big bully chickens (including his mother), is doing quite well. He’s no longer a chick and has merged into real chicken life, sleeping in the coop at night with the others and foraging for his own food. With this said, he is still very fond of us and being in our house. He tries to sneak in when Aili opens the door. Sometimes, he’s successful and then cleans up crumbs under the table before being persuaded to return outside. It’s quite convenient acutally. For a while, he’d even sit on your head. I kid you not. It didn’t bother Karissa but was pretty traumatic for Aili, and since Aili is closest to his level, it’s not uncommon for Percy to follow her around and try to pick the buttons off her clothing.
Then on Sunday we were trying to play a little baseball and he kept trying to “play with us.” I think he really thought he could field a grounder which I assure you that he cannot. Karissa’s a slugger! He nearly lost his life a couple times. So the question arose, if he did get hit, would we eat him? It’s a question that can only be asked since he’s still alive. I have a feeling that Percy might actually get a casket; he’s so well liked.
